The October 7th Geo-visualization Project. Mapping the Women´s Massacre

One week after the events of October 7th, three Israeli siblings took on a mission to preserve the memories of the victims and promote a deeper understanding of the tragic events by creating an interactive map. AVIVA-Berlin was reaching out to the oct7map team: to support and to make their important work and the victims and survivors of the massacre visible.

The interactive map reveals the atrocities of October 7th and shares the stories of the victims and the survivors. It shows the locations from where the more than 240 people got kidnapped and makes their fight to escape, to survive, to help others, visible. Furthermore, it sheds lights on how the terrorists conducted the massacres and provides a comprehensive representation of the atrocities committed by Hamas on that day. This interactive map serves "as a reflection and an educational tool, promoting awareness of the gravity of the horrors".

Above all the interactive map talks about the victims, it gives detailed information about their life before they had been brutally killed or abducted, their profession, their beliefs and dreams.

Women in October 7th Massacre

The October 7th Geo-visualization Project-Team: "On October 7th, 320 women were killed in a coordinated act by the Hamas terror organization. Additionally, about 100 women and girls were kidnapped. Women and girls caught in the rampage were sexually brutalized, physically tortured, and killed. Survivors witnessed it, and surveillance footage caught it. In one instance captured on video, a woman was seen with her dress torn, her body gruesomely mutilated and burned, a stark representation of the violence inflicted upon the victims. Photographs of women´s corpses found in the kibbutzim show the severity of the assaults. Survivors, women who endured the horrors of the attacks, were not only confronted with the profound loss of their loved ones but also subjected to sexual assault. The Hamas perpetrators, primarily men, went beyond acts of violence; they deliberately targeted women, treating them as property or vessels to inflict harm on the state of Israel. Women, falling victim to severe assaults that ultimately led to their tragic deaths, left their horrifying experiences to be recounted by first responders witnessing many who endure profound violations of their humanity and subjected to unspeakable acts of sexual mutilation."

"This gender-specific war crime compounds the already distressing impact of the assaults and calls for the urgent need to look at its broader consequences. Within this broader context, our focus here is specifically on the experiences of women during these tragic events."

Who we are:
We are three Israeli siblings who, one week after the events of October 7th, took on a mission to preserve the memories of the victims and promote a deeper understanding of the tragic events. With the assistance of other volunteers who have supported us throughout this journey, we all contribute voluntarily to our ongoing efforts to expand our database. Our team comes from diverse backgrounds, including engineering, UX design, scientific research, and big data.

Mission and goals:
Our mission, stemmed from a realization that people struggle to access and comprehend information about significant events, is to offer a reliable and comprehensive well-sourced tool, countering the prevailing culture of doubt surrounding current events.

How we source our data:
We utilize publicly available data and employ several measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information we provide. This process primarily involves sourcing information from public online platforms, including trusted news outlets, social media insights, and official memorials. Subsequently, we conduct thorough validation and assurance of information safety by cross-verify our findings.
Additionally, we receive non-public information directly from the families of the victims and survivors of the massacre.
The marks on the map represent the last known location of the victims as published on credible sources, with geo-tag accuracy varying between every victim (depending on the level of detail disclosed).

Access to our data:
Our goal is to make the details and stories of October 7th as accessible as possible.
Therefore, the map can be re-used in various ways, either by screen recording or screenshots, or by leveraging our public dataset for articles: service-f5qeuerhaa-ey.a.run.app/api/individuals

It is an ever growing dataset for each of the murder/kidnap victims of October 7th. It is updated daily and includes name, location, age, references to reporting sources and a written paragraph on each individual.

Efforts to memorialize the massacre:
Our initiative fosters collaborations with groups dedicated to memorializing the events of October 7th, such as museums, lecturers, and broader online exposure. We believe that, in an era where access to knowledge and news can overwhelm individuals, understanding the intricacies of significant events is crucial. Therefore, we endeavor to create a high-quality, simplified, and accurate platform for learning about these events in a manner that is both accessible and respectful to the victims and their families.
